Steve Frankel (stevemdr) views photographing yacht races as a convergance of his longterm obsessions with sailing and phototography . Steve started sailing when he was 12 and has raced regularly on both coasts. He also started photography at 12 and was a professional working his way through college photographing weddings, sporting events, and "regulars" enjoying themselves in local bars, by the time he was 18. "To shoot yacht races, "Steve says, "you need to have an understanding of what the racers are doing, thinking and going through on their boats. You can only develop those understandings by racing yourself. You also have to be comfortable on boats when the wind velocities and seas are high." Steve comments that during the first day of the Champagne Regatta (whose photos are posted on this site), he shot from the Race Committee Boat which was anchored in 8' rolling seas that caused most of the race committee members to get so seasick that the second race of the day had to be cancelled. "Shooting yacht races," he says, "is the ultimate in 'grab shooting.' You can't pose the shots, you can't control the shooting conditions, and you never get a second chance."
